Kickass Classical Music

You can never beat classical music. I stumbled upon this site, http://www.kickassclassical.com/, an informative page on almost every popular classical music that you’ve probably heard before (I recognized more than half of the music on the list). It’s kinda cool to learn more about music that you just took for granted because you hear it everywhere from movies to cartoons to ads. Here are some of interesting facts that I learned from the website:

  • The Lullaby aka cradle song was composed by a German, Johannes Brahms (1833-1897). Wow, so it’s that old.
  • The American Graduation song was composed by an English composer, Edward Elgar (1857-1934). The title is Pomp And Circumstance.
  • The Clown/circus music was actually called ‘Entry of the Gladiators’ by a Czech military orchestra composer, Julius Fucik (1872-1916). LOL
  • Haha..Yes I finally found out who made that song from the Cookie Monster segment in the Sesame Street. It’s Rondeau by Jean-Joseph Mouret (1682-1738).
  • If it wasn’t for Mozart, you wouldn’t sing “twinkle2 little star”, “Black Sheep” and the “Alphabet song”
  • The intense music that you always hear from movie trailers. O Fortuna by Carl Orff (1895-1982)
  • The Strauss of the Blue Danube and the Strauss of Also Sprach Zarathustra are different person. I thought it was the same guy due to similar surname and both piece appearing in 2001 Space Odyssey
  • The cliche love theme composed by Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), who also made the “blow-up-parliament-V-for-Vendetta-theme
  • Richard Wagner– The guy who composed the badass “Ride of the Valkyries” was the same guy who made the infamous Wedding tune.

To close this post, I present you THE one hit wonder, Pachelbel’s Canon. I discovered this musical piece back in High School and instantly fell in love with it. A beautiful piece although I never play it myself (not a musician, I don’t know how to read a musical note). But then you start hearing it everywhere and the song eventually bores you. I would also like to thank this Asian dude back in Highschool, never knew his name, who keeps on playing the canon with the piano at the music room almost everyday after school. It helped ruined the song for me. So Thanks ALOT!!!

Here’s Pachelbel Canon if you want to listen to it:

And then check this video where the guy rants about how he hates the Pachelbel Canon so much.
