Keeping up with the trend of ‘old movie heroes returning’ (Stallone in Rocky & Willis in Die Hard) is the return of Harrison Ford as bad ass archeologist, Indiana Jones.
Set in the 1950’s, this time Indiana Jones is up against the Soviets in a race to get the mysterious & probably powerful Crystal skulls. Helping Jones this time is Shia LaBeouf playing…..Mutt Williams….but everybody knows he will play ‘Shia LaBeouf’ you know, the same character he plays in Transformers, IRobot & Constantine 🙄 Ray Winstone (Beowulf himself) is also joining the gang and so does Indy’s former girlfriend from the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Marion Ravenwood played by Karen Allen (she’s still hot after all these years). It is also rumored that we also get to finally see Marion’s father and Indy’s mentor, Abner Ravenwood who was mentioned to be dead back in the first movie. He will be played by John Hurt.
Since this is set in the 1950’s, it’s kinda appropriate to replace the Indy’s villain from the Nazis to the Soviets. According to legend, the crystal skulls have supernatural powers rangng from healing to killing people. Some say that there are many Crystal Skulls yet to be found around the world and when these skulls are brought together, the world will change. No wonder the Soviets wants it.
Another staple of the 1950’s is the cheesy science fiction movies. According to the recent article from Vanity Fair, George Lucas stated that they’re approaching this new Indiana Jones movie along the lines of ‘B science Fiction movie’ like The Blob, The Thing, The Creature from the Black Lagoon. No, Indiana Jones isn’t going to fight monsters but this gives hints that the rumored plot concerning Area 51 and Aliens may be true.
So what do you get? Indiana Jones has to stop the cold blooded evil Soviets from getting the powerful ancient Crystal Skulls to enslave the world. This is made urgent when two opposing nuclear superpowers, the democratic USA and the communist Soviet Union, knew the extraterrestrial origin of the Crystal skulls due to their secretive research on crashed UFOs with the Soviets being apparently ahead of the Americans as seen from their successful Space program. *Takes a breath*
Many people have already complained about the Cold War Sci-Fi route that they’re taking but if you look at the each of the three previous Indiana Jones movies, they’re all different. Raiders of the Lost Ark was more of a classic adventure story. The Temple of Doom was darker and violent too (I used to skip the dinner scene with the monkey heads when I was kid. It was too disgusting for me at that time LOL). The Last Crusade was my favourite. It was more lighthearted and the addition of Sean Connery as Indy’s father was the highlight of the movie. I also thought that the ending of the movie with Indiana Jones, his father, his sidekicks Brody and Sallah riding off to the sunset was the best way to end the series or so I thought. So I’m fine with the Kingdom of Crystal Skull being more sci-fi.
Set to be released in May 22, 2008.
